Shimmy & Stitch: Burlesque Panel Skirts

Class Description

Instructor: Roula Roulette Sundays, 4/26 & 5/3 11:45 AM - 2:00 PM Price: $100, registration is for both days Learn the secrets behind one of burlesque’s most iconic costume pieces. Over two workshop sessions, students will construct their own panel skirt while learning foundational sewing and garment construction techniques. Come prepared with your materials and leave with a custom skirt ready for spins, reveals, and dramatic stage moments. It is expected that students have a basic knowledge of how to operate their own sewing machines. Roula will not be providing introductory level sewing machine support during this workshop. Students Should Bring: •Chiffon: 6–9 yards minimum - 6 yards will create two half-circle panels - 9 yards will allow for a full circle back panel • Matching thread (please no metallic thread) •Good fabric shears •Pins •Measuring tape •Tailor’s Chalk or any other water soluble fabric marking pencil •Belt Fabric (stretch or non-stretch) & matching thread - Roula recommends a satin, embroidered fabric, etc. This should cover the color of the belt entirely and coordinate with your overall costume. If you get a stretch fabric, you can incorporate that same fabric into other aspects of your costume easily to tie the skirt in • Hanger - Preferably a pant hanger with clips •Sewing Machine (the studio only has 3) - Ensure you have your own needles, bobbins, etc. Materials Provided by Roula: •Denim, Muslin, & Elastic – used for the belt base •Closures, including: Snaps Magnets Quick-release fasteners Hook-and-eye closures If students have questions about the materials list, they can email Roula directly at: rentals@metrostudioseav.com
